El origen del nombre no está identificado. Algunos escritores del siglo XIX han sugerido que comenzó a usarse a través de leyendas aborígenes. Algunas otras historias, la comparan con el vocablo inglés "yahoo" ("a rude, noisy or violent person) "-(una persona ruda, ruidosa o violenta) entre otra acepción.

En una columna de "The Sydney Morning Herald, en 1987, la columnista Margaret Jones escribió que el primer avistamiento en Australia, fue en 1795.. (y agrego algo de mi cosecha: este artículo de 1987 salió debido al avistamiento del Yowie por dos amigos pescando de noche en el Hawkesbury River -Sydney. Según ellos, apareció de repente y comenzó a gritarles furiosamente, desde la orilla.
